Custom Design of an x86 SBC - TS-5700 |
 |
The redesign of the TS-5600 to the TS-5700 began
as a request from a customer. After reviewing the features of the
TS-5600 with our engineers, they determined it was “almost” right for
their application, and asked if we would modify the SBC to meet their
requirements.
The customer's basic requirements for the new
embedded PC included:
- PCMCIA slot – for a Cellular Modem
- Compact Flash - to run Linux and provide
non-volatile data storage
- DIO lines – to gather and sample data
- Ethernet – to connect to the local network
- 4 onboard Comm Ports – to communicate with
other serial devices
In a product review, the customer and our
engineers determined that the TS-5600 most closely met the
requirements. Neither the A/D Converter (ADC) nor the Digital to Analog
Converter (DAC) were required, which allowed us to free up real estate
for the two additional Comm Ports.
The design was sent to our Marketing Department
and it was determined a market existed for the new configuration. This
allowed us to create the new TS-5700 embedded PC, with the customer
funding the development cost and Technologic Systems absorbing the
manufacturing start-up costs.
The collaborative effort with our customer was a
win-win solution. Our customer got the embedded PC that met his
requirements, and Technologic Systems added another COTS SBC to our
product line.
